Installing on Windows
Chiselbase isn’t code-signed, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warns on the first launch. The warning is titled “Windows protected your PC”. SmartScreen shows it for apps that carry no signature and little download history.
- Choose “More info”.
- Choose “Run anyway”.
Installing on macOS
The macOS builds aren’t notarized, so Gatekeeper refuses to open Chiselbase the first time. It’s the macOS version of the SmartScreen warning above.
- Open Chiselbase once and close the message.
- Go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and choose “Open Anyway”.
- On macOS 14 or earlier, you can also Control-click the app in Applications and choose “Open”.
Or remove the quarantine flag in Terminal:
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Chiselbase.app Updates are checked differently. Before an update installs, Chiselbase checks its manifest, file size, SHA-256 hash and signature against a public key built into the app. That protects updates. It is not code signing and doesn’t cover this first download.
System requirements
- Windows
- Windows on x64 or ARM64, with Microsoft Edge WebView2.
- macOS
- Apple silicon or Intel, with a DMG installer for each architecture.
- Linux
- x64 or ARM64 as an AppImage. Credentials are stored through Secret Service.
Windows is the primary development and validation platform. macOS and Linux builds are available; platform-specific issues may need additional troubleshooting. Built with Tauri and Rust, Chiselbase uses your system webview rather than bundling a browser.
What happens on first start
- Chiselbase opens without an account or sign-up.
- It opens in German. Switch the language to English in Settings.
- Choose “Connect project” and sign in with a service-account JSON file, Application Default Credentials, your Firebase CLI login or Google sign-in. The emulator needs no credentials.
- Chiselbase may find credentials already on your machine. It uses none until you confirm.
- Pick the environment label. A new production connection starts write-protected.

Updates
Updates come through the app from the stable channel. Each one passes the manifest, size, SHA-256 and signature checks above before it installs.
